Wall decor: why choose an art print over a poster

You feel it the moment you walk into a room: a wall with a real art print doesn't do the same thing as a wall with a generic poster. But it's hard to put into words. Here are the concrete differences, so you can choose knowingly.

Poster or art print: what's the difference?

A poster is a file printed in bulk on standard, often glossy paper with ordinary inks. The result can look good, but the colours fade with light and the paper buckles with humidity.

An art print (fine art print, or giclée) is printed with pigment inks on paper made for conservation. My current prints are made in Brussels on Canson Arches 88, a 100% cotton, acid-free paper of 310 to 330 gsm. The colours stay deep and stable, exactly as I painted them.

Why limited editions matter

A limited edition is a commitment: the image will never be reprinted beyond the stated number. My current prints are issued in runs of 10 or 20, numbered (for example 12/20) and signed by hand. Several editions are already sold out.

Numbering also means traceability: you know exactly which copy you own.

What makes the difference on a wall

• Colour: pigment inks render tones ordinary printing can't reach. Blacks are deep, warm tones vibrate.
• Material: Arches 88 has a slight texture that gives the image a real physical presence.
• Framing: a fine art print frames easily, with a mount and anti-reflective glass. It's all explained in our framing guide.
• Rarity: knowing only ten or twenty copies exist changes your relationship to the object.

Which interiors?

My painting is about interiors, plants and everyday scenes, in frank colours. It works in rooms that aren't trying to neutralise everything: a contemporary living room, a minimal bedroom that needs a note of colour, an office that's a little too dull.

For a living room wall, a large framed print asserts itself naturally. For a bedroom or a study, 30 × 40 cm is often enough to create the focal point the room needs.
